What’s up, everybody? ‘Tool here back with another post. I want to discuss the rabbit hole a lot of engineers and producers go down acquiring or “needing” new plugins. Most times those shiny new toys are best kept where we found them. Whatever DAW you’re using, it comes packed with stock plugins that will times help you achieve a great mix. Stay tuned and we’ll cover a few ways to know if that next plugin is really for you. Do I Really Need That Plugin?
Ask yourself this before any decisions are made. Do you own a similar plugin to what you want? Do you still use it? If not sell it or gift it to someone that could use it. Use the 1-In-1-Out method so you don’t take up precious hard drive space. Compare & Compare Again There are a million ways to justify getting a new plugin. I believe I know them all! If you’ve been eyeballing a particular plugin, take it for a test run and see what all the fuss is about. Put it side by side with any similar plugins you already have. If the sound, workflow or whatever issues you’ve been experiencing persists, do you really need that plugin? Full Price? For What?! 95% of my plugin purchases have come at discounted prices. I love to get great value for my money. Developing plugins is a long, sometimes grueling task so I can definitely understand the price points of some but it doesn’t hurt to get a steal when you can. What I like to do is make a list of plugins I would like to purchase and just wait for them to go on sale. Signing up for a newsletter or making purchases on major holidays will help immensely. That doesn’t mean to plugin hoard for the sake of saving money. Use the time away without what’s on your wishlist and you may come away asking yourself, “Do I really need that plugin?” In closing, make sound decisions when it comes to not only purchasing plugins but using them as well. Comment below on any other ways you feel would help our readers. Until next time, it’s ‘Tool.
